Announcing the John Ford Blogathon

My friend, Anna, sent me a copy of the Ford at Fox box set on the condition that we run a John Ford Blogathon. Anna blogs over at Bemused and Nonplussed.

I don't have a snappy title--"Print the Legend" was taken by a blogathon a couple of years ago and I don't want to nick that. So "The John Ford Blogathon" it is. If you want to participate, please leave your name and your blog in the comments and tell me what you want to write about. You can write about more than one thing. This is going to be a week-long affair. It will run July 7-July 13.

For myself, I'm planning on writing about How Green Was My Valley and probably some of Ford's work from the 1930s (since I have that shiny new box set), but all periods of his work are fair game. Entirely up to you. Duplicates are allowed, but if you want to shy away from repeating anyone, here's what folks want to write about:

  2. Hi! I just found your blog through Movies, Silently. I'd like to take part in the blogathon with The Iron Horse (1924).
My blog, Critica Retro, is written in Portuguese but I have a translator for events like international blogathons.

  12. Hello, Chritianne. A friend just pointed me to your blog-a-thon. My website is directedbyjohnford.com. I'll be happy to post about your blog-a-thon there and on its Facebook page. I am not sure yet if I am able to write a full piece myself but I will try. I would like to participate as well as promote and am looking forward to reading the various posts. Especially those new to Ford or less familiar with him in depth.

    We Have the Stars

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi, April! I hope you can fit us in. Plenty of time before the blogathon to decide.

Hi, Whitney. Go for it. No one has spoken for it yet (and duplicates are allowed anyway--there's a lot of space to fill in seven days!)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hello! I'm wondering if I can do "The Sun Shines Bright" (1953) – if it hasn't been spoken for?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi! I'd like to do the 1926 silent THE BLUE EAGLE, if I may! If so, it'll signal the first on the silents portion of my blog. Thanks for your time!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi, Clayton! Awesome. Welcome aboard!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hello. I'd love to participate and would like to do She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, which I haven't seen yet.

    ReplyDelete
  20. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is a swell film. Glad to see it on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hello! If it hasn't already been taken, could I please write about The Grapes of Wrath?

    My blog: girlsdofilm.wordpress.com
    Thank you! Vicki

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi, Vicki! You're the first one to ask for it, so The Grapes of Wrath is all yours. Welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi, Vulnavia,

Got your note on Twitter and I've love to participate in your blogathon! Anything that brings more traffic to your superb blog is good in my book and a John Ford blogathon is a great idea. If it hasn't been taken already, can I do Young Mr. Lincoln? If that one's not free, I'd gladly take on The Whole Town's Talking, too.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi, Aubyn! Young Mister Lincoln is all yours. So is The Whole Town's Talking. Do 'em both! I have a week to fill with posts!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm in if you'll have me. Been noodling a piece on The Searchers for awhile now and this seems to be the perfect incentive to finally get it done. Might also take a run at They Were Expendable if no one else takes it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Someone has already spoken for They Were Expendable, but don't let that stop you. Microbrewed Reviews, I assume? In any event, The Searchers is all yours for the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ah, TWE is first on the list of requests! (That's me smacking myself in the head right now.) Lets shift that second pick to Donovan's Reef.

And yes, these will be posted at the Brewery.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Would love to write about Drums Along the Mohawk.

My blog is at The Round Place In The Middle

    link is

    http://theroundplaceinthemiddle.com

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'd like to do Submarine Patrol, simply because so little has been written about it.

While my blog is Mayerson on Animation, I have written about Ford and John Wayne on the blog.

    http://mayersononanimation.blogspot.com

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oooh. I've never seen anything about Submarine Patrol. I've never seen the movie, either, so this should be at treat!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Greetings, Christianne. Gary Cahall from MovieFanFare here. I read about your John Ford Blogathon, and with your permission I'd like to claim his 1931 prison comedy Up the River, the only film to co-star Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy. We will most likely run it on Friday, July 11. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi, Gary. I've got you down. I look forward to your entry!

    ReplyDelete
  33. May I write about Katharine Hepburn's relationship with Ford and the making of MARY OF SCOTLAND (1936)?

    ReplyDelete
  34. P.S. I just submitted to blogathon to the Classic Movie Hub events page for you.
    http://www.classicmoviehub.com/events/category/blogathons/

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes! Please! That would be a fascinating post. And thanks for spreading the word!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi! This escaped me but I'd love to take part! If it's not too late and RIO GRANDE is still available that's my choice. :) Let me know.

    Aurora
    Once Upon a Screen (aurorasginjoint.com)
    @CitizenScreen

PS - my second choice would be THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (just in case)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi, Aurora!

Amazingly enough, you're the first person to claim Rio Grande. (I'm allowing dupes anyway, so it's all good). If you also want to write about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, that would be cool, too. It's a (foolishly) long blogathon, so there's plenty of space for entries.

    ReplyDelete
  38. May I write about THE LOST PATROL (1934)?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi, Beth! Absolutely! Any excuse to squeeze in Boris Karloff!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi, this is Dan from The Hitless Wonder Movie Blog (http://dandayjr35.blogspot.com). I would like to write about "The Horse Soldiers"--I don't think anyone else has chosen that film yet.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi, Dan. The Horse Soldiers is a good one! I can't wait to see your post!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would love to write about Maureen O'Hara and her relationship with John Ford and John Wayne in some of their collaborative efforts at Christy's Inkwells: http://suesueapplegate.wordpress.com
    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for having me, can't wait to revisit The Duke VS Paint Your Wagon's Lee Marvin as brawling buddies in Hawaii!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hello,

I'd love to participate--and write about The Whole Town's Talking if it's not already taken!--for my blog, The Stop Button (www.thestopbutton.com).

    Thanks,
    Andrew

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi, Andrew,

Go for it. I look forward to it!

    ReplyDelete
  46. If you're still taking entries, I'd like to do Fort Apache (1948) for the 'thon. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi, Stacia!

We'll be taking entries until the last minute! So welcome aboard!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Christianne, in case it wasn't already obvious from my comment on Facebook, I very much intend to do something for this. I haven't written anything about Ford yet and it's been eating at me, and now - opportunity!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi, Rod. Just let me know where you'll be writing. Ferdy on Films or This Island Rod?

    ReplyDelete
  50. This sounds so much fun. I'll participate and write about either Young Mr. Lincoln or Liberty Valance. I look forward to seeing what everyone writes about.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi, Willow!

Excellent! You can write about both if you want. It's a long blogathon.

    ReplyDelete
  52. On Ferdy on Films, Christianne, and probably 7 Women.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Excellent. I've never seen 7 Women so it'll be a treat!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hiya. My name is Kevyn Knox, and I would like to offer up both myself and my blog, All Things Kevyn, to be participants in your John Ford Blogathonie. I would like to do a post on "My 10 Favourite Lesser Known John Ford Pictures."

Does this sound okay? Hope so. See ya 'round the web. All Things Kevyn

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi, Kevyn. That would be great. I've got you down.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Interesting. This sounds tempting but I'm not sure what film of his I'd cover. You seem to have most of the big ones down and I'm not sure I know Ford's work as well as some.

If we were dealing with Howard Hawks or John Huston it'd be another story but I have no idea where I'd begin to decide on Ford.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi, April here from Directedbyjohnford.com...for the benefit of some of my readers who aren't familiar with "blogathons", can you be more specific about the process? Mostly they want to know when and how they post their articles...by a specific time, do they email the link to you, etc.
    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi, April.

Basically: your folks write their articles and post them during the dates of the blogathon (you can write in advance if you want, it's the publication that matters). Send me a link either by commenting on this or the blogathon posts during the blogathon and I'll add the articles to the ongoing blogathon roll. Alternatively, you can email me at archaeopterxy_wtw (at) yahoo (dot) com

And make sure to link back to the blogathon when you post.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thank you very much, Christianne!

  60. I'm writing on "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" for the SueSue Applegate blog.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Is it possible to still get involved in this blogathon. Would love to join in.

    ReplyDelete
  62. There is most assuredly time to get in on this. Welcome! I've got you down.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi, is it possible to write a bit on The Last Hurrah and/or The Horse Soldiers? Thanks, Tom

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi, Tom. Absolutely. I've got you on the list!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh, and let me know where you'll be blogging, Tom.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi Vulnavia,

I would like to submit a post on some of the little known, but still very good women's roles in Ford's films. Would that work for this blogathon?

    Thanks!

    David Meuel

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi, David! That would be wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hi! I just saw an ad for your blogathon on John Ford films in July. If it's not too late, I'd like to participate and write about the 1960 film Sgt. Rutledge.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hi,Jenni! Yes! It's not to late! Sgt. Rutlege is all yours.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hi,

If your person decides not to do "Young Mr. Lincoln" I would love to do it!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hi! I'm Leah at carygrantwonteatyou.com. This blogathon sounds great. Could I write about Mister Roberts?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hi, Barry,

Please write about Young Mr. Lincoln. Multiple entries are allowed, and I love seeing how different people respond to the same movie!

    Hi, Leah,

That would be awesome. Particularly given the unfortunate way he departed that movie. Lots to write about.
