It seemed a little more old-fashioned to me than a prime Pre-Code film because, in the latter sort of film, the heroine would probably find a way to survive and might even take her chances with Bruno yet come out on top. It felt like an older sort of story because of that final play for pathos, with the heroine renouncing all, like something out of silent movies.
