I was watching Powell and Pressburger's 49th Parallel over the weekend and, boy howdy, does Olivier ham it up in that movie doing a French Canadian accent. Took me right out of the movie. It says something when Anton Walbrook seems more natural in a movie as a farmer(!)Vulnavia Morbiushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04722740955194993451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18814440.post-86154624377362112862011-04-05T05:48:00.816-07:002011-04-05T05:48:00.816-07:00Olivier is too in love with doing an accent as Van...Olivier is too in love with doing an accent as Van Helsing.

Ah, now it makes sense! I watched this about a year ago and was so puzzled about Olivier, because clearly he was doing SOMETHING weird and off key, yet I couldn't put my finger on what it was.

The reflection business made me actually stop the DVD and try to figure out if I had missed something or if it was a mistake. The film had taken such pains to get other bits of the legend correct -- I recall the Count not coming in the door of the house for dinner until someone specifically said "come in", for example -- so the reflection mistake was disappointing.Staciahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05250238254417726987noreply@blogger.com
